Hi, I’m Rebecca!
One of my favorite genres of video games are JRPGs like Xenoblade Chronicles 1 and 2, the Persona series, the Final Fantasy series (particularly Final Fantasy VI), and Chrono Trigger. Many of these games start with the hero living their normal, safe lives until something happens that turns their world upside down. They answer the call to action and grow and learn as they save the world. I love it! The characters, the deep stories, the little guy winning against the big bad - I just love all that those games encompass.
Similarly, I always liked to take the “safe” path in my life. I’ve always had stories in my head, and I love playing video games but decided to channel my passions into teaching. I loved teaching! Watching students’ eyes light up when they understood something or being told at the end of the year they hated history even a little less because of me was so fulfilling. But, just like the heroes in my JRPGs, tragedy struck in June 2019 when my dad lost his battle to cancer. In that same year, I lost my aunt, and a pet. It was a very harsh reminder that life is too short. So, I had my call to action - stay in my “safe” career or take my shot and see if I could make it as a game designer. After being admitted to SMU Guildhall’s Cohort 30 for a Master’s of Interactive Technology, I knew I had my answer.
My time learning the ins and outs of level design has only further strengthened my passion for video games as a medium and the good it can do for both entertainment and education. I want to tell compelling stories that help build empathy and give people characters they can relate to and grow alongside.
Outside of video games, I love reading, crocheting, anime (Sailor Moon for life!), and spending time with my fiance Shawn and our two cats Same (Sah-May) and Aru. I have begun dabbling in tabletop gaming, and I am always up to try new things and find my next passion.
